Founded by Al Buhl, the Vineyard and Winery are on 100 acres at an altitude of 4300 ft, between the Chiracahua Mountains and the Dragoons and within view of Cochise Stronghold. The Vineyard sells grapes to other Vineyards in Arizona, Texas and New Mexico but the Winery only makes wine from grapes grown on the estate.
The Dos Cabezas’ Pinot Gris 2000 was served at the White House in February 2002. Dos Cabezas wines have an international following thanks in part to co-owner Sam Pillsbury, a native of New Zealand, and one of Hollywood’s respected Producer/Directors. The 2000 Sangiovese made by Tucson vintner Frank DiCristofano was recently introduced to Tuscany, Italy by members of “Slowfood”, the regional food celebrant movement. This Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese clone grown in the Arizona desert was said by many to be the best Sangiovese in America. Hugh Johnson said “Dos Cabezas is producing fantastic wines from Petite Sirah and a blend of Petite Sirah and Sangiovese.” Joshua Wesson in Forbes Magazine wrote of the Petite Sirah “A heady, fleshy, massively constructed red wine” and Jay Biletti, in Wine and Cuisine Magazine wrote “In each vintage, this wine exhibits an extremely dark purple hue with intense cherry and berry flavors. The wine is so rich and viscous that it seems almost “chewy,” and the finish is forever. The alcohol, fruit intensity, and tannin structure suggest a wine that will age for a couple of decades.”
The ’03 Vintage includes some wines from the new “Norte” vineyard, including a stunning Sirah and a blend of Mourvedre, Grenache and Petite Sirah, largely the creations of up and coming winemaker Todd Bostock.
As one wine enthusiast put it; “If you’re seeking a safe wine with a heavy Madison Ave. influence, continue west, but if you’re seeking passion, uniqueness and quality…Dos yourself.”
